Ghost Stairs
Ghost Stairs
Wood, string, paint, magnets
2025

Inspired by past structural elements of the house that can only be imagined by the left over paint that still outlines those now removed parts, we created another version of absent stairs in the exhibit space, by building a frame that suspends with string four sets of two pieces of wood in a similar spacing as stairs. The wood is imbedded with rare earth magnets, which allow the bottom wooden parts of each set to hover just below its mate leaving space between. If not for the magnets the bottom pieces, only suspended by string, would fall to the ground and the top pieces would swing around if they did not have the magnetism holding them ever so slightly apart; as if a ghostly presence was holding them in space.

Ghost Stairs was a site specific collaboration installation by Mark Geist and Megan Czekaj, in the Pardee Morris House, New Haven, CT.
